李白一詩(shī)十余英譯

李白一首《靜夜思》：“床前明月光，疑是地上霜。舉頭望明月‘低頭思故鄉(xiāng)。”是英譯最多的了。

我在《中詩(shī)英譯敘談》一書中，曾介紹過黃雯醫(yī)生，林如斯，英人 Giles，Lowell，Cranmer-Byng，日人小畑等人的英譯。

據(jù)劉師舜《中詩(shī)選譯》一書中的統(tǒng)計(jì)，此詩(shī)英譯見于書冊(cè)者，還有下列九人：Ayscough，Christy，Esteb，F(xiàn)letcher，Jenyns，Kang，Lyon，蔡廷干，劉師舜。加上前述的，已有十多種英譯了。

在一九七三年出版的“Li Po and Tu Fu”（《李白與杜甫》），英人 Cooper 也翻譯了這一首詩(shī)，如下：

Before my bed there is bright moonlight,
So that it seems like frost on the ground;
Lifting my head I watch the bright moon,
Lowering my head I dream that I'm home.

劉師舜的譯文如下：

The moon shines on my bed brightly,
So that I mistook it for frost on the ground.
I gaze at the moonlight with head uplifted,
Now my head droops, and my thoughts turn homeward.

“故鄉(xiāng)”一詞，劉師舜譯作“homeward”，Cooper 譯作“home”。Giles、林如斯、黃雯醫(yī)生等三人也譯作“home”。

小畑則譯作“far-off home”，Lowell 則譯作“home of old days”，Cranmer-Byng 卻譯作“fatherland”，F(xiàn)lecher 更與眾不同，而譯作“Youth's memories”。

“低頭思故鄉(xiāng)”，F(xiàn)letcher 的譯文是這樣的：

Then hide them full of Youth's sweet memories.

譯文中的“them”字，乃是指“eyes”，眼也。

“舉頭望明月”這一句，F(xiàn)letcher 是譯作“On her clear face I gaze with lifted eyes”的。

中詩(shī)一個(gè)“望”字，不必明說“眼”字，英譯譯明“eyes”當(dāng)然可以。至于中詩(shī)一個(gè)“思”字，F(xiàn)letcher 譯作“hide them”（“them”指“eyes”），這就不是直譯，而是另有意境了。
